The Boys Soccer team (13-8) took their next step to fulfill their goal of returning to the state finals and winning Covenant’s first state title on Saturday, as they defeated Providence HS (12-7) 1-0 in the IHSAA Class A South Semi-State match at Seymour HS. The win over the Pioneers sets up the Warriors for a rematch of last year’s 1A State Final, in which CCHS lost 2-1 to Fort Wayne Canterbury. Canterbury (11-7-4) defeated Boone Grove HS (18-3-1) 3-1 in overtime in the North Semi-State game yesterday afternoon. The IHSAA 1A State Final will be played at IUPUI’s Carroll Stadium on Friday, October 26 at 6:00 pm.
The South Semi-State was also a rematch of last year’s South Semi-State game. Covenant came out as the aggressor on Saturday, and controlled much of the action in the first twenty minutes of play. Twelve minutes into the game, Senior Ethan Hurt made a strong run down the right side, crossing the ball into the middle of the box. PHS goalkeeper Sophomore Zach Aurilio got his hands on the cross, but could not control it. The ball bounced in the middle of the box and was headed into the left corner of the net by Senior Gabe Byrd. The momentum shifted to more of an evenly played game late in the first half, but the Warrior defense and Senior goalkeeper Jacob Susud made the shutout stand up for the win. Susud made multiple diving saves in the waning minutes of the first half.
CCHS outshot the Pioneers 11-7, with five of the eleven Covenant shots on frame. PHS put six of their seven shots on goal.
The Covenant/Canterbury match will be video streamed LIVE on the IHSAA Champions Network (www.ihsaatv.org) as well as audio streamed on Indiana SRN (www.indianasrn.com). More information for parking, ticket information, and all of the necessary details for Friday’s state final match will be released as they become available.
Friday’s 1A Boys final will be followed by the Class 2A Boys final at 8:15 pm, which will pit Cardinal Ritter HS (18-4-1) against Hammond Bishop Noll HS (19-2). Saturday’s schedule will include the 1A Girls Final of Evansville Mater Dei HS (15-4-1) vs. Wheeler HS (22-0) at 10:30 am, followed by the 2A Girls final between Cathedral HS (12-4-4) vs. South Bend St. Joseph HS (16-5-2) at 1:00 pm. The 3A Boys final between Zionsville CHS (17-1-3) and Chesterton HS (20-0-2) at 3:30 pm, with the 3A Girls final of Carmel HS (19-1-2) vs. Homestead HS (18-3) at 6:00 pm.
